The Matterport Pro3 and the Insta360 X4 are often mentioned in the same breath when it comes to virtual tours. In reality, however, the two devices pursue different approaches. The Pro3 is a professional LiDAR 3D camera whose core is the active capture of room geometry. The X4 is a consumer 360° camera that works on an image basis and can be used far beyond the real estate sector. Anyone wanting to make the right decision should ask less about the supposedly better device and more about which result is specifically needed.

Capture Technology: LiDAR vs. 360° Optics

The Matterport Pro3 uses LiDAR, i.e. active distance measurement via laser pulses, to determine the distance to walls, floors and objects. From these measurement points and the panoramic images captured at the same time, a spatially coherent 3D model is created. One advantage of this method is its independence from favorable ambient light: depth measurement works even where purely image-based methods reach their limits.

The Insta360 X4 relies on two opposing wide-angle lenses whose individual images are stitched into a complete 360° panorama. There is no active depth measurement. This makes the camera small, light and very flexible, but also means that the spatial geometry is not captured with the same reliability as with a LiDAR system. For many tours this is sufficient, but for dimensionally accurate measurements it is not its primary strength.

When it comes to price, there are worlds between the two devices. The Pro3 is an investment in the professional segment and usually entails recurring costs for hosting and the platform for the 3D models. These costs are part of the concept because the result lives strongly within the platform's ecosystem. The X4 is positioned in the consumer range and is therefore significantly cheaper to acquire. Depending on the chosen workflow, additional software or platform costs are lower or eliminated entirely. Anyone who scans rarely or starts with a small budget will find a low-threshold entry point here.

Workflow in Everyday Use

Capturing with the Pro3 is tripod-based and uses multiple positions per room. Processing into the finished 3D model runs largely guided through the platform, which makes the process predictable but also ties it to the respective system. The X4, on the other hand, is very portable and fast to capture with. In return, stitching the panoramas and creating a finished tour may require more manual steps or additional software depending on the target format. Both paths are practical but suit different working styles.

GDPR and Anonymization

Regardless of the device, the same data protection principles apply. When capturing interiors, people, name tags, documents or other personal details should be avoided as far as possible or subsequently anonymized. The Matterport ecosystem provides partially supporting functions for this. With the X4, anonymization lies more within your own or an external editing workflow, as no unified platform ecosystem is prescribed. In both cases, careful preparation of the rooms remains the most effective measure.

The Matterport Pro3 plays to its strengths where dimensionally accurate digitization, floor plans and reliable documentation are required, for example in demanding real estate projects or condition surveys. The Insta360 X4 is the flexible, cost-effective solution for fast 360° tours as well as for photo and video content that goes beyond pure room measurement and is well suited to portals and social media.

Conclusion: Which Device for Whom?

A blanket recommendation would be inappropriate because both cameras serve different needs. The Pro3 is the right choice when dimensional accuracy, reliable 3D models and a higher budget come together. The X4 is ideal when a portable, affordable entry into 360° content is sought and centimeter-accurate measurements play no role. In many cases, the decisive question is not which device is better, but which result is ultimately needed.
