Our specialization: Preserve historical architecture digitally and make it tangible for a future-proof optimization of your processes.
Why scan historical buildings?
Monument protection with millimeter precision
Preservation of vaults, columns, and altars for damage documentation and reconstruction.
Virtual Tourism & Church
Believers and those interested in history visit historic churches around the world interactively and without barriers.
Basis for church communities
Precise plans for planning renovation measures and applying for funding.
Typical Use Cases
Virtual church & monastery tour
Walk-through 3D models for tourists and believers with interactive information about images of saints, altars, and organs.
Renovation & restoration planning
Precise 3D inventory capture as a reliable CAD basis for structural engineers, architects, and restorers.
Digital damage documentation
Detection of cracks or deformations in the masonry through regular scans for precise progress control.
Digital preservation of our cultural heritage
Churches and historical buildings are characterized by complex geometries, irregular walls, and valuable historical decorations. Conventional surveying methods often fail completely in these cases. Our 3D laser scanning captures even inaccessible ceiling frescoes, church towers, and niches without contact and with millimeter precision. The result is a high-resolution 3D point cloud for long-term preservation and precise damage analysis during renovations.
Turnkey Integration
We support you from concept creation to on-site data capture and the final API interface to your management systems.

Churches, monasteries, and cathedrals are architectural masterpieces, the preservation of which represents a gigantic challenge for parishes, restorers, and monument protection offices. Aging building structures, weather damage to delicate sandstone facades, and the imminent risk of fire disasters (like Notre-Dame in Paris) require uncompromising, complete archiving of these historical sites. At the same time, church communities face the task of making their cultural and religious heritage tangible for an increasingly digital society. FotoEstate uses high-precision spatial data technologies—from terrestrial 3D laser scanning (LiDAR) to high-resolution drone photogrammetry—to preserve these unique structures as digital twins for eternity and transform them into immersive experiences for virtual tourism.
1. 3D laser scanning for monument protection (LiDAR)
Historical religious buildings are characterized by Gothic ribbed vaults, irregular floor plans, and detailed altars. Manual measurements reach their technical limits here. Our 3D laser scanners capture the complex geometry of a church nave without contact and with millimeter precision. The system scans the surfaces with millions of laser points and generates a dense 3D point cloud. This serves as an error-free working basis for restorers and structural engineers. Settlement cracks in masonry or the inclination of a church tower can be precisely monitored over the years through regular scans (monitoring).
2. Digital backup copy in case of disaster
Cultural assets are acutely threatened by environmental influences, vandalism, and fires. A digital twin acts as an incorruptible architectural life insurance policy. Should a catastrophic event occur, the millimeter-precise 3D measurement (as-built documentation) provides the exact blueprint for a reconstruction true to the original. Architects can derive precise 2D facade views, ceiling mirrors, and orthophotos from the point cloud, which makes the reconstruction historically authentic and plannable.
3. Virtual tourism and barrier-free access
Many areas in historic churches—such as bell towers, underground crypts, or historic libraries in monasteries—are inaccessible to the general public for security reasons or due to a lack of accessibility (wheelchair accessibility). Through our high-resolution 360-degree tours (virtual tours), we make these hidden places accessible worldwide. A user in the USA can use a web browser to descend into the crypt of a German cathedral or view the structure of a ceiling fresco up close (gigapixel resolution) without endangering the delicate original.
4. Multimedia storytelling in the digital twin
A virtual church tour from FotoEstate is not a quiet space, but a multimedia experience. We enhance the 3D tour with interactive information points (Mattertags). If the visitor virtually clicks on the historical altar, a text about its art historical significance opens. As they approach the church organ, a high-resolution sound recording (spatial audio) of an organ concert is automatically played. Even video interviews with the priest or donation links to maintain the roof can be seamlessly integrated into the room structure, which greatly increases the willingness to donate (fundraising).
5. Objective data basis for funding applications
The renovation of sacred buildings is extremely costly and usually depends on funding (foundations, federal, state). Approval of these funds often requires detailed, indisputable documentation of the damage. A 3D model that objectively visualizes and quantifies the need for renovation on roof trusses or facades is a decisive advantage in the application process. It demonstrates technological competence and planning reliability at the highest level to decision-makers.
